St Mark’s Catholic College, Stanhope Gardens NSW
MBA Award Winner 2019: Private Schools – $10M-$15M
The project at St Mark’s Catholic College in Stanhope Gardens entailed the construction of a new Multi Purpose Hall within an existing, operational school, designed to be a flagship performance space for Catholic Education Office Diocese of Parramatta.
Through the incredibly detailed design the hall stands as a bold concrete triangular structure, with two wings and an amphitheatre branching off each of its three sides. The functionality of the space has been thoroughly workshopped with the school and diocese, to provide diverse learning and performance areas for its end users.
From the large 300 seat covered amphitheatre, through a pair of mammoth overhead airport doors lies the main performance hall. With a stage at its peak, it is geared up to showcase performance, with sprung timber flooring, mezzanine level control rooms, incredibly high acoustic ceilings and its state of the art audio visual system.
Off to the Northern side of the building, the bold modern foyer leads out to ‘St Mark’s Square’, a huge outdoor learning and congregation space. Snaking walkways, seating and landscaping break up the concrete jungle to the Eastern side of the outdoor space and lead back up to a smaller breakout amphitheatre. The raised drama performance space, overlooking the forecourt, links indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Eastern side of the building comprises of the more practical areas of the building, with music classrooms, storage areas, practise rooms and upholstered music pods. A complete and functional recording studio resides In the far corner of this wing. Overall the spaces have been cleverly designed to cater for large, medium, small and individual uses, both in and outdoors. Rooms and areas can be acoustically separated to allow this.
